Alexandria County was formed in 1789 from Fairfax County and included Alexandria City. It was formally established in 1801 as a county in the District of Columbia. In 1846 the county was given back to Virginia and organized in 1847 as a Virginia county. Alexandria County underwent a name change in 1920 and became Arlington County. The city of Alexandria became an independent city in 1852.

The 1783-1801 records were registered with the Hustings Court in the city of Alexandria. From 1801 to 1847 the deeds were recorded in the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia which was held for the county of Alexandria. After 1847 they were recorded with the County Court (later the Circuit Court, then Corporation Court) for city and county of Alexandria.

Includes a general index. Most volumes are also individually indexed.
