The Kirk Family

In 1790 James Kirk came from Virginia and settled on Cartwright’s Creek, a short distance from the town of Lebanon, Marion County, the territory being then embraced in Nelson County, Kentucky. Dixon married Nancy Hoskins, a daughter of Rudolph Hoskins, of a Virginia family, who had settled in the same locality on Cartwright’s Creek. Dixon Kirk was born in Virginia in 1790, and consequently was an infant when the family removed to Kentucky. He lived for a time in each of the counties of Washington, Marion, Adair and Grayson, but in 1856 removed to Missouri, where he died the same year, his wife having died in Grayson County, Kentucky in 1836. In 1868 he was elected to the office of sheriff of Marion County, serving one term , and is now the efficient deputy stamp collector for the Fifth District of Kentucky. He was married in 1868 to Miss Alice Bell Cowherd of Green County. She is the daughter of Frank Cowherd (deceased), and Judith F cowherd (nee Cox) now of Green county. An only son, James F Kirk died in infancy.

Robert E Kirk, one of the principal business men of Lebanon, and cashier of the National Bank of Lebanon, is the youngest son of James H. and Rachel E Kirk and was born July 11, 1847. He received a good English education in the schools of Lebanon, and on the 20th of September was married to Miss Grace Green, daughter of Charles Breen, of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Their three children are May, Grace, and Alethia Kirk. Mr. Kirk is an honored member of the Masonic fraternity , and of the Second Presbyterian Church.
