The index will give you the date of death and file/certificate number. To get the film for the actual certificate, go first to the date, then the county, and the file/certificate number. A description of the year, month, volume, span of counties, and file/certificate numbers is found on the spine of each volume on the film. The file number and certificate number are the same number.

Records prior to 1910 are organized by county, and are in rough chronological order by volume and file/certificate number.

Records for 1910 are organized alphabetically by surname and by file/certificate number. After 1910, records are organized by year, month, and county, with all certificates created in a county grouped together sequentially by file number.

Delayed death records are filed as a group at the end of each year by file/certificate number.
