This microfilm publication reproduces "the proceedings of U.S. Army general courts-martial (220), drumhead courts-martial (2), and military commissions (12) of 234 Union soldiers executed by U.S. military authorities betrween 1861 and 1866. Most of these proceedings are part of the Records of the Office of the Judge Advocate General (Army). Other proceedings reproduced in this microfilm publication are found among the letters received by the Enlisted Branch, Adjutant General's Office, 1861-89, and among the compiled military service records of volunteers who served in the Union Army, 1861-65. These two series of records are part of Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1780's-1917"--Introd.

"The proceedings of the general courts-martial and the military tribunals filmed in this publication are arranged alphabetically by name of defendant. Cross-references to aliases are also given. The typical proceedings include a copy of the order establishing the court or commission. The directive gives the names of the officers chosen to serve on the court and of its judge advocate, the defendant's name and unit, and the place where and the date on which the court was to convene. The proceedings proper give the charges and specifications directed against the accused and his plea (guilty or not guilty) in response. By far the greater part of the proceedings consists of a verbatim transcript of the questions asked by the court, the judge advocate, the defendant, and the defendant's counsel and the responses of the witnesses. The finding of the court, its sentence, and the review of these determinations by the officer who ordered the court complete the proceedings. In a few cases the proceedings include exhibits offered as evidence (as many as 20 in the voluminous proceedings of the trial of Hiram Oliver and John Hartup by military commission and the confirmation or remittance of a death sentence by the President of the United States"--Introd.
