Phoebe Marie Curtis was born in Holt County Missouri on February 2, 1852 to Erastus and Mary Caroline Curtis. She was a big lady, on the chunky side, rather tall. She was never sloppy in her appearance. Phoebe married three times. In December 1868, she married Henry Neach Larter in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah. She and Henry had eleven children before his death in 1896. After he died, she married a Mr. Pierce. When Mr. Pierce died, she lived with her son, Lee, who was a bachelor. Then she married a Mr. Osborne who was a Seventh-Day Adventist. He also died while she was still living. When she was ninety, she told her son, Claudius, that she would marry again if she found someone that would have her. She died on February 4, 1849 in Salmon, Idaho at the age of 97 and was buried in Mackay, Idaho.
She was a very meticulous housekeeper, down to the very list minute. Her great-granddaughter, Madge, said that her mother, Ora loved to visit her and would often spend the whole day with her.
She outlived her son, Claudius, but at the time he died, she started to have mental problems. When she went to his funeral at Loella's house and saw him laid out, she said that looks like Claudius never realizing that the person lying there was her son.
