Microfilm of originals at the National Archives of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario.

The "C" numbers listed in the following cataloging description are the National Archives of Canada film numbers. The "C" numbers listed on the index cards are the vol. numbers of the "C" series.

The original "C" series was filmed by the Public Archives of Canada (now the National Archives of Canada) from 1966 to 1969. The NAC film numbers are included on this record with each film description. The index was refilmed in 1991 by the Genealogical Society of Utah. There are no NAC film numbers assigned to this filming of the index.

Most of the films of the original military records are "best copy available.".

The British military records, Series I (commonly known as the "C" series), are records accumulated by British forces stationed in North America. Series I ("C" series) contains the following groups: Series I A--Correspondence of the Military Secretary of the Commander of the Forces, 1767-1870; Series I B--Records of the Canadian Command, 1785-1883; Series I C--Records of the Nova Scotia Command, 1762-1899; and Series I D--Miscellaneous Records, 1757-1896 (includes, among others, some American Loyalist regiment muster rolls, 1777-1783, and records of some Canadian militia units from the War of 1812 and the Rebellions of 1837-1838).

"The Military "C" Index includes more than 500,000 entries arranged for the most part alphabetically, but with some chronological organization evident under certain headings. The index is generally nominal, but there are a substantial number of cards under various subject headings.... The Military "C" Index provides nominal and subject references to only Series I A [vols. 0-1038, 1204-1320]--Correspondence of the Military Secretary of the Commander of the Forces, and to portions of Series I D--Miscellaneous Records [including the Loyalist regiment muster rolls, 1777-1783, vols. 1851-1908]. As well, cross references to certain other collections formerly in the now obsolete "M" Series at the National Archives of Canada will be encountered throughout the Military "C" Index.... Vagaries of this type may require researchers to contact the State and Military Archives Program, Manuscript Division to have the problem resolved by an archivist."--General Introd. to the Military "C" index (1991). Many volumes are also individually indexed.
