(Iredell Co.); due to following decree and for 10s each sold 2,400 acres; decree is from Equity Court Salisbury Dist. Rowan Co., NC Abstract of Deeds, Bk 6, p 399, 13 Feb 1767, John McConnel & wife Mary let Alexander Work & John Work -- all of Rowan Co., NC -- have 106 acres on the east side of Davidson Creek on its bank next Benjamin Winsley, for 40 pounds, witnessed by James Davidson & Thomas Greer & recorded in April 1767, marked "Sent by James Ramsey". (This is part of a tract which was granted to John McConnell on 5 Nov 1757).

Ibid., p 276, 25 Jan 1775, John McConnel & wife Eals & Andrew McConnel let John Work -- all of Rowan Co., NC -- have 238 acres on west of Davidson Creek next James White, Moses White, James Willson, William Reece, & said Work, for 160 pounds, witnessed by David Byars & Alexander Osborn & proved by the latter in Feb 1775. (This is part of the 344 acres deeded John McConnel Sr. Nov 5, 1751? & he let the said John & Andrew McConnel have it in 1760).

Ibid., (don't have Bk but date is 6 Feb 1777), Alexander & John Work & Moses Winsley give a bond of 12 Feb 1777 that they (Alex.& John Work) of one part, to Moses Winsley of the other part, "that whereas there has been a line of Division between the Land that the said Alexr. & John Work now lives on, and the Land that the said Moses Winsley now lives on and that there is more Variation given in their Deeds of Conveyance that there is agreeable to the Line trees Know ye therefore yt. (sic) the said Alexr. Work and John Work and their heirs Exrs. Adms. and Assigns and the said Moses Winsley his heirs Exrs. Adms. and Assigns doth promise and Oblige themselves to stand to and hold to the Old Mark'd Trees that was made at the Survey by Frances Beaty by Frances Batey by Frances Beatey and for the true performance of every Article above Written each partly doth bind themselves to each other in the penal sum of One Hundred pounds Current Money of the province" &. (the first Frances Beaty is scratched out and Frances Batey written).

Ibid., Bk 9, p 113, 13 Mar 1780, James White & wife Mary let John Worke -- all of Rowan Co., NC -- have 200 acres on Davidsons Creek next the land of John Worke on the north & east with Moses White on the west, ... for 7200 pounds NC money, part of the land granted Moses White on March 25, 1752, who let the said James White have this on Feb 18, 1769.

Ibid., 6 Nov 1779: "Ordered that John Work be released from a four fold Tax, producing an Inventory on Oath to the Sessors of Newington District, and that Said Assessors value his Taxable property and make Return of the same to the Clerk, and it is ordered that the Sheriff count & receive tax agreeable to such Assessment and the said Sessors are hereby authorized & directed to assess said inventory".

Ibid., 11 Feb 1780: "Ordered that Mr. John Work pay only a single Tax, he having complied with the Order of this Court made last Term, his property pursuant to such Order being assessed at L5900."

Rowan County, NC, Vacant Land Entries, 4 Feb 1778, provided Elaine Oakes, gives:

"#27 John Work 150 acres on Davidson's Crk adj E end of tract Work bought of John McConnell, Sr. & adj lines of James Templeton, Thomas Cribbs, & John Lister. A Claim Sett up by Alexander Work."

"This indenture made the twenty eight day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred between Robert Work and Alexander Work Junr ? of the County of Iredell and State of North Carolina which said Robert Work and Alexander Work Junr are two of the sons and heirs of John Work Senior late of the same place deceased of the one part, and Alexander Work Senr of the same place Esquire of the other part. Whereas by a decree of the Court of Equity for the District of Salisbury pronounced in a certain suit wherein said Alexander Work Senr was complainant and the said late John Worke & one James Wilson by original Bill & the said Robert Worke and Alexander Worke Junr & John Worke Junr and Joseph Criswell Work by bill of ______ Defendants. It was among other things ordered and decreed that the said Robert Worke should then Immediatelly, and the said Alexander Work Junr John Worke Junr Joseph Criswell Worke them Infants should upon their arriving at the age of twenty one years make one or more deed of conveyance to the complainant the said Alexander Worke Senr and his heirs with warranting against them the said John Workes heirs and all claiming under them or any of them ___ity of land in (among other tracts) four tracts in the County of Iredell formerly Rowan on waters of Davidson Creek The first and second tracts purchased from John McConnel Senr and his wife Mary the third tract purchased from John McConnel & Alice his wife & Andrew McConnel, the fourth taken by the late Kings patent containing by computation in the whole eleven hundred and five acres as in and by the said order and decree relation? being there unto had more fully appear. And whereas the said Alexander Worke Junr party to these presents has since the pronouncing of the said decree attained his age of twenty one years, Now this Indenture Witnesseth that in obedience to and in part performance of the said order & decree and in consideration of the sum of ten shillings a piece to them the said Robert Worke and Alexander Worke Junr severally and respectfully in hand will and truly paid by the said Alexander S. Worke Senr at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents the several receipts and payments where of do severally and respectfully acknowledge they the said Robert Worke & Alexander Worke Junr have and each of them hath granted bargained sold aliened and confirmed and by these presents do and each of them doth grant bargain sell alein and confirm unto the said Alexander Worke Senr his heirs & assigns all the before mentioned tracts or parcels of land containing eleven hundred & five acres more or situate lying and being in the County of Iredell formerly (Rowan) on the waters of Davidson Creek. The first survey containing 587 acres beginning at a hickory at (none now in place) the ___ E 400 poles to a hickory thence N 265 poles to a hickory thence West 244 poles to a hickory on Davidson line now Reeses thence with the said line South 77 poles to a stake Davidson or Reeses corner, thence with Davidsons line W 156 poles to a stake in said line, thence S 188 poles to the beginning. The second survey containing 106 beginning at a birch on the bank of Davidsons Creek running E 51 chains to a hickory, then S 47 chains to a hickory then West 14 chains along Benj. Winslows line to a white oak then N 34 chains along Moses Whites line (Now Alex Worke Sen) to a hickory, thence West 41 chains to a wild cherry three near the bank of said creek then North 12 chains to the first station. The third tract containing 238 acres beginning at a wild cherry tree on the band of said creek (a corner to the tract before mentioned) running hence along Whites line West 36 chains to a white oak then N 56 chains to a hickory then E 43 chains to a stake in Eph Davidsons line, then S 45 chains along William Davidsons line to a birch s'd Alexander Worke's Senr corner, then South 25 chains along said Workes line to the first station. Fourth tract containing 174 acres beginning at a small hickory corner to the first mentioned tract, then with said Alex'r Workes Senr line South 424 poles to a post on Winslows line then East 50 poles to a white oak corner to Terrences landd then with Terrences line N 456 poles to an oak saplin on Templetons old deeded lands then with the same South 86 poles to a white oak on the line of the first mentioned tract, then East 70 poles to the beginning containing the whole four surveys or tracts eleven hundred and acres as before mentioned. Together will all houses building woods waters issues minerals advantages and appurtenances to the said premises belonging or in any wise appertaining and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders unto issues and profits thereof and and all the estate right title property interests claim and demand whatsoever both at law and equity of them the said Robert Worke and Alexr Worke Junr and each of them of in to or out of the promise hereby bargained and sold or mentioned or intended so to be and every part there of to have and to hold the said undivided __rity of land

in the said and all __ ___ular other promises hereby bargained and sold or mentioned or intended so to be with the appurtenances unto the said Alexander Worke Senr his heirs and assigns, To the only proper use and behoof of the said Alexander Workes Senr his heirs and assigns forever, And the said Robert Worke and Alexander Worke Junr for themselves severally and respectfully and for their and each of their several and respective hiers executors or administrators of the other of them, do hereby convenant and promise and grant to said Alexander Worke Senr his heirs assigns that they the said Robert Worke and Alexander Worke Junr and their heirs shall and will warrant and forever defend the said promises hereby bargained and sold or mentioned or intended so to be with the appurtenances to the said Alexander Worke Senr his heirs and assigns against themselves the said Robert Worke and Alexander Worke Junr and their several and respective heirs and against all and every other person and persons lawfully claiming or to claim by from or under or any of them or either of them or their or either of their heirs.

(There are several land transactions in Bedford Co., TN, involving Robert S. Worke, heir of Alexander Worke. I believe this is the son of Robert the son of John. In one entry, Deed Bk AA, p 111, 26 Jun 1802, registered 23 Mar 1829, Robert, Alexander, Jr., and Hanna Worke are witnesses to land bought by Alexander Worke, John's brother.
