The county was named after President Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) who was serving as United States Vice President at the time of the county's formation.[1]

1835 -- County formed

Boundary Changes[edit | edit source]

Van Buren County was renamed Cass County during the presidential election of 1848.[2]
