Church Records/Civil Registration[edit | edit source]

  • Parish Register Headings for Norway: This pdf gives the translation of headings for the records in different time periods. When a record is written with labeled columns it is much easier to search. Much of the material you read in each column will just be names and dates, since the meaning of those names (child, parents, godparents, minister) only has to be read once, in the column heading.

Cemeteries[edit | edit source]

The Genealogical Society of Norway (DIS-Norge) has started a country-wide project to index and take photos of cemeteries throughout Norway. The project began in April 2004 and has the ability to include: a full transcription of the tombstone, aphoto of the tombstone, and sometimes a transcription of the burial records recorded by Norwegian church vergers.

This database, which includes more than 2.4 million registered entries, contains many Sør-Trøndelag cities and parishes; including cemeteries located in Hitra and Orkdal. The project is updated frequently, and shows what records are being published to the website by place. The database can be searched in English, and can be searched by cemetery, name or place. While it is not a fully comprehensive database, it has excellent information for those who are searching in these specific areas.

The website can be found here: DIS-Norge: Gravminner i Norge
