Québec does not have a central registry for the entire province. Instead, adoptees and birth parents must go to the original Agency that handled the adoption. These agencies are called Centres Jeunesses (Youth Centres) and are in towns and cities in Québec. A contact list is included.

The Montréal Centres Jeunesses—Baths Family Services—holds the majority of adoption records for English speaking adoptees and should be checked first if this fits your criteria. You will need to determine where the family that adopted the child lived at the time of the adoption to determine the correct Centre Jeunesse.

In 1984 the legislation changed allowing both the adoptee and the birth parents to register for a search. The adoptee must be 14 years of age to begin a search and the birth parents cannot search for their child until the child is 18 years of age.

The fee for this service is $450 with $150 going towards the search itself and the remaining $300 for counseling. This counseling is very specific to expectations and concerns of the parties involved. If the search does not end in a reunion then the applicant receives a refund.

There is no cost for the non-identifying information and both adoptee and birth parents receive this information. The Adoption Order is not given out and searches for siblings and grandparents are not undertaken.

If adoptees and birth parents do find each other on their own it is suggested that they could both contact the Centre Jeunesse to have their information confirmed just in case an error has been made.
