Cumberland County is located in the South-Central portion of North Carolina and its name was derived from the title of Prince William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, the son of King George II[2].

The 1860 census required 111 pages to enumerate the population of Cumberland East, a now forgotten populated place with post office Fayetteville. As of June 2021 the place name Cumberland East has been submitted to the United States Geological Survey for addition to the Geographics Names Information System (GNIS) searchable database.
