About 1680 the Lord Proprietors of North Carolina renamed Currituck Precinct the Carteret Precinct (not to be confused with the later Carteret County of a different location). However, the new name was not accepted or used outside of official circles by the precinct residents. By the mid-1680s the name was changed back to Currituck. The name has remained Currituck ever since.[1]
Records of the renamed Carteret Precinct can be found in repositories of Currituck County, or at the North Carolina State Archives.
