The county was named after the then-prevalent buffalo herds. Buffalo County was named for American bison. It is located in the south central area of the state.[2]

A copy or an extract of most original records can be purchased from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services or the County Clerk's office of the county where the event occurred.
