Swiss German: habitational name derived from the name of the now ruined castle of Wolfsberg near Bauma in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland. This surname is also found in southern Germany. Compare Sparger , Wolfenbarger , Wolfenberger , and Wolfersberger .

History: The Swiss German Wolfensberger (less commonly also Wolfensperger) family trace their origin to Hans von Wolfsberg, born toward the end of the 14th century in the castle of Wolfsberg near Bauma. Some of his descendants brought various forms of the surname to North America: first Wolfersberger and Wolfensperger (both in the first half of the 18th century and again in the 19th century), and last Wolfensberger (since the 19th century by various bearers from Switzerland and also from Germany). The name was brought to southern Germany in the 17th century.
