Whitehorn Family History

Whitehorn Name Meaning

English: nickname, according to Reaney, “[c]learly a nickname, perhaps one with [ sic] a splendid trumpet or drinking‐horn (Old English hwīt ‘white, fair, splendid’ and horn).” However, the records of Joh. Wytepintell, 1317 in Jönsjö, Nicknames , Avelina Whyghtpincell’ [for -pintell’], 1381 in Poll Tax , clearly with Middle English pintel ‘penis’, suggest the possibility that Whitehorn is a nickname meaning ‘white or fair penis’, whatever that might imply. That said, the word horn is not found in the general vocabulary in this sense before the 18th century.
