Harry Ellsworth McCroskey was born in Cedar County Iowa in 1892, the son of David Williamson McCroskey and Hattie Luella McQuillen. He married Gladys Evangeline Johnston. Their children included Robert, Dorothy, Jeanne and her twin sister, and David. Harry's earliest ancestor documented in this book is John McCroskey who was born in Ireland in 1692 and immigrated to Virginia around 1758. He married Elizabeth Gay. Their children included John, Alexander, Samuel, David, Esther, Margaret, James, Elizabeth and William. The earliest ancestor of Gladys Evangeline Johnston discussed in this book is William Johnston, who was born in Moffat Parish in Scotland. William married Margaret Short, and their children were Margeret, John, William, Matthew, Agnes and Thomas. Other surnames include McQuillen, Penticoff, Anderson, Youel, Rice, Borton, Hancock, Shields, Lippincott, Elkinton, Antrum, Sharp, Austin, Latta, Owen, Stratton, Brannin and Workman. .
