Notes

Published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register for July 1986.

Alexander Duncan (1805-1889) emigrated from Scotland (via Liverpool) to New York City in 1822. He settled in Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, where he was naturalized in 1827. He also attended Yale College (now Yale University) in New Haven, Connecticut and married Sarah Butler in 1827. They lived in Providence, Rhode Island and in New York City until they immigrated to live in London, England in 1863, chiefly because of his failing health. "Although it may seem unusual that a family would return to the British Isles after achieving prominence in America, such reverse migration did occur." (P. 211).

Includes Bloodgood, Hamilton-Stubber, Hay, Hunt, Sargent and related families.
