These census records represent a partial listing of voters. The 1856 census of voters was taken by the District Committee No. 4 and divided by "Free State", "Pro-Slavery", or "Doubtful". The 1857 census was taken by the sheriffs and their deputies under the probate court which revised and corrected the census "in pussuance [sic] of an act to provide for the taking of a census and election for delegates to convention passed by the governor and legislative assembly of said territory in February A.D. 1857". - 1st p. of Atchinson County census.
The census of the Shawnees in 1857 were for those (native or adopted) "who have made or have had made for them, the selections of two hundred acres of land each, to which they are entitled under the 2nd article of the treaty made with that tribe on the 10th May 1854". - 1st p. of Shawnee census.
The 1858 census was taken by people commissioned by "the provissions [sic] of an act to provide for taking a census in certain districts therein specified" - 1st p. of Marshall county census.

Counties of Allen (part of 18th district), 4th district (copy of 1856 list), Anderson, Atchison (3rd district), Bourbon, Dorn, McGee, Brown, Calhoun, Davis, Doniphan, Douglas, Jefferson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Lykins, Marshall, Nemaha, Pottawatomie, and Riley. Also the census of Shawnees, native or adopted. - 1858. Johnson and Marshall counties.
