From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, around 50,000 people emigrated from Luxembourg to the United States of America. Many settled in Chicago, Illinois, and in Sheboygan County and Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, and the states of California, Iowa, and Minnesota. Some came earlier from Baden, Bavaria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hesse, Holland, Prussia, Switzerland, and Wurtemburg. Some have relatives and descendants in Luxembourg, Venezuela, and in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Maryland, Nebraska, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Wyoming, and elsewhere. Issues contain biographical sketches of members and their ancestors, book reviews, excerpts from other published works and their English translations, extracts of church records, deeds, emigration and immigration records, extracts from military registers and ships' records, family group sheets, histories, information about the Letzebuergish or Luxemburgish language, letters from members, marriage notices, members' lists, transcripts of naturalizations, obituaries, reunion reports, research reports, reports of visitors from Luxembourg, traditions and holidays celebrated in Luxembourg and Belgium, foreign word lists, and other records. Dates covered are mainly from the early 1800s to the present.

Luxembourgers had a tradition of bestowing nicknames on one another. In 1908, Nicholas Edward Becker (a.k.a. Beckesch Klos) wrote "Lexicon der eigenthümlichen Benennungen vieler Bewohner des Nördlichen Theils von Ozaukee Co., Wis. und Umgebung" in other words, "Dictionary of the proper names of many inhabitants of the northern part of Ozaukee Co, Wis. and surrounding area." This book consisted of two indexes of residents of Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. The first index was based on their nicknames and the second on their given names. This book also includes information about the person's occupations, relatives, home town in Luxembourg, and other information. "Lexicon" also includes songs, and poems by the author. The book was written in Old German Fractur script. Lloyd Croatt's English translation of the first volume of "Lexicon der eigenthümlichen Benennungen . . . " appears as installments in issues of "Letzebuerger sprooch." This library does not currently have the book "Lexicon" in its collection.

Includes many excerpts from a related periodical, "Luxembourg news of America" which is the official organ of the Luxembourgers of America, Inc., published in Skokie, Illinois, and edited by Victor J. Jacoby. This monthly periodical is not currently in this library's collection, but back issues may be viewed on-line at their Web site.

Lloyd Croatt translated Nicholas Gonner's book, "Die Luxemburger in der Neuen Welt" (Luxemburgers in the New World) into English and published it in installments in this newsletter. The original contains transcripts of the 1849 passenger manifests for various ships leaving from the ports of La Havre and Antwerp and arriving in New York City. The manifests also give some information about the passenger's county of origin and their intended destination in America.

Includes installments of Hund's book on the history of the Village of Fredonia in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. This book includes many brief biographical sketches of Fredonia's early citizens.

Includes information about Pioneer Village, established as a memorial by the Ozaukee County Historical Society. It consists of seventeen restored buildings constructed by the original Irish and German settlers to Fredonia, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.
