Notes

The licenses were issued by the clerk of the County Court. In 1904 this was changed to the clerk of the Circuit Court.

The copies of ministers' returns found in Register of marriages, 1833-1854, give names of the parties to be married, date and place of marriage, and who performed the marriage.

Registered marriage licenses, 1850-1862, indicate a license was issued by the clerk of the County Court. It gives the parties' names and permission for the minister to perform the marriage. Includes parental permissions. Some of the original licenses are found in Register of marriage licenses, 1861-1869.

Loose licenses were arranged chronologically and bound into the book "Register of marriage licenses, 1861-1869". Information varies but usually gives names of bride and groom, ages, marital status, birthplaces, parents' names, husband's occupation, residences, date and place of marriage, date of license, and who performed the marriage.

Register of marriages, 1853-1939, gives date and place of marriage, full name of the parties (husband and wife), age, marital condition (single, widowed, divorced), birthplaces, residences, parents names, husbands occupation, name of person performing marriage ceremony, and remarks (includes race and date license was issued). Marriage register, 1939-1986, gives much of the same information.

The register of colored persons (created in 1866 and returned 1869 to clerk's office) was made according to the acts passed to legalize marriages between 'colored' persons co-habiting as husband and wife at that time. Arranged chronologically, it gives year, place, names of husband and wife, ages, marital status, birthplaces, residences in 1866, parents names, husbands occupation, names of former spouses and children. The register covers 'marriages' from 1812 to 1866.

Volumes are individually indexed, except for register of marriages 1861-1869.
