Registers of births and deaths, 1853-1897 ; indexes to registers of births, marriages and deaths

Notes

The commissioner of the revenue registered births and deaths for the county and then turned his books over to the clerk of the County Court. The clerk made abstracts to send to the state auditor and would also preserve the books in his office.

These registers were copied from the original registers by W.P.A. workers in 1937.

The register of births gives child's name, date and place of birth, race (if before 1865 and "colored", gives whether free or slave), sex, if born alive or dead, father's name (if before 1865, gives name of slave owner), father's occupation, residence, mother's name, how many children born at the birth, any birth defects, and sources of information. Information is not always complete. The years 1863-1864 may be missing.

The register of deaths gives the name of the deceased, race (if before 1865 and "colored", gives whether free or slave), name of slave owner (before 1865), sex, date and place of death, cause of death, age, parents' names, birthplace, occupation, spouse's name if married, and sources of information. Information is not always complete.

Includes general indexes. Volumes are also individually indexed.
