Except for March and April of 1960, the paper contains the Church news. These appeared weekly on varying dates of the week. They were in Wednesday, Sunday, or Saturday papers but the most common day is Saturday.

The Deseret News was established in June of 1850 as a weekly and continued publication until 1898. The Deseret evening news began publication on 21 November 1867. On 15 June 1920 it shortened its name to the Deseret news. In September 1952, it absorbed the Salt Lake telegram and was published as the Deseret news/Salt Lake telegram until 1966 when it again shortened its name to Deseret news.

Various editions of the paper have been filmed based on the copies available in the Historian's Office. This is not the film copy available in most other libraries and therefore is not covered by indexing done for those copies.

A Church news column, page and later section begins to appear in 1902. These contain genealogical works of various kinds until the end of 1931 when they begin to appear only on occassion.

The Church section for the years 1936-1947 has an annual index.

Daily except Sunday.

The volume and numbering vary and there are frequent mistakes. The year number given to the paper after 1898 is based on the publication of the original Deseret news beginning in 1850. Some volume and numbers are repeated because of title changes.
