Notes

Early bonds and licenses were issued by the County Court. Returns, consents, and later bonds and licenses were issued or recorded with the clerk of the County Court.

A bond is a legal document wherein a person commits himself, his heir, executors and administrators to pay a required amount of money to another if certain duties are not performed. These were paid by people to ensure a marriage took place.

Ministers' returns were lists made by the ministers of marriages they had performed.

Arranged in chronological order. Contains loose marriage bonds, parental consents, licenses, and ministers' returns. Information varies on the different documents but usually gives names of husband and wife, date of marriage or bond or licenses, who performed the ceremony, and sometimes parents' names, place of marriage, etc.

Microfilm of original records at the Smyth County Courthouse in Marion, Virginia.
