FamilySearch and America250 FAQ
What is America250?
America250 is a national initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. It invites individuals, families, and communities to reflect on the nation’s history and contribute stories that represent America’s shared heritage.
How is FamilySearch participating?
FamilySearch is a program partner of America250, helping people discover, preserve, and share their family history as part of America’s story. Through digital experiences, events, libraries, and storytelling tools, FamilySearch encourages individuals to “Add What They Know” to the historical record.
Where can people participate?
The FamilySearch America250 page features discovery experiences, story sharing opportunities, and tools to explore United States ancestors. New content will be released throughout 2026.
What kinds of activities are included?
- Online family history discovery experiences
- Story and memory preservation
- America250 Celebration Ideas (FamilySearch Blog)
- FamilySearch social media content (Facebook/Instagram)
- Onsite discovery booth at local events
- Participation through local FamilySearch centers and affiliate libraries
Where are my recorded family stories saved?
Stories recorded through this experience are preserved on the FamilySearch platform. While America250 helps promote national participation, story submissions are not automatically included in the official America250 or Library of Congress archives.
Do I need a FamilySearch account to use these discovery activities?
Most of the activities require some information about you to help make connections with relatives and ancestors. You can sign in using a service, such as Google, Apple, or Facebook, or you can create a free FamilySearch account in seconds.
What if my family tree is small or incomplete?
You might be surprised by what you can learn even if your Family Tree doesn’t go back to 1776 yet. Even a few generations may reveal immigrant ancestors, military records, or historical connections. As you add more information, additional discoveries may appear.
What is the 250 Challenge?
The FamilySearch 250 Challenge encourages individuals to participate by:
- Adding 2 family members to the FamilySearch Family Tree.
- Recording and preserving 5 personal life experiences.
- Adding 10 family memories.
- Exploring historical records tied to United States ancestors.
How long does the campaign run?
The FamilySearch America250 campaign runs from January through fall 2026.
