Sarah Ann James (William, William R., John), was born near San Gabriel in San Bernardino co., CA April 22, 1854. She was the daughter of John Marshall James born 10 October 1816 in Woodbury Cannon co. TN and Margaret Hawkins (Johnson) James born 18 October 1824 in Howard or Boone co. MO. She was raised in the mountains above San Bernardino, California. Called Crestline or James Flat, named after her father.
Her schooling was provided by her father at his mill. He had a one room school house built at the mill and the teacher was J. J. Willis. He was the logscaler and bookkeeper of the lumber mill.
Tilghman Davis Andrew was born Medford Maryland on May 11, 1846. He was the son of Richard Andrew and Rebecca (Camper) Andrew. He was an adventurous young man and decided to go west. He decided to join the U.S. Army. He was sent to Arizona and California to help defend settlers from Indians. For a while he was stationed in San Bernardino, where he met Sarah Ann James.
They met every Sunday at church and Sarah was crushed when the Army sent Tilghman back to Arizona. When Tilghman was discharged from the Army, he walked from Tucson, Arizona, to San Bernardino, California. To be with Sarah. Tilghman went to John Marshall James and obtained employment to be close to Sarah. He worked for John several years before he had nerve to ask the "Boss" for the hand of his daughter. He finally did and Tilghman and Sarah Ann were married on April 30, 1872 in San Bernardino, California. Tilghman and Sarah lived for a while in Victorville, CA then El Monte,CA.
In 1890 they purchased land near El Monte and planted fruit and English walnut trees. This ranch was their business for the rest of their lives.

Tilghman and Sarah were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in El Monte.
Sarah (James) Andrew died in El Monte February 22, 1907. She was 53. Tilghman died hi El Monte, California August 20,1911. He was 65. They are buried in the El Monte Cemetery.
