  • Nearly 200 friends, associates and former pupils of Ray Daughters bade him farewell last night at a testimonial banquet marking his retirement after 34 years as swimming coach and athletic director for the Washington Athletic Club.

Among the tributes was establishment of a $2,000 Ray Daughters Scholarship by 82 of his former swimmers. Jim English, project chairman, said its winner will receive $500 a year for college education.

Daughters received letters and telegrams from scores of national sporting leaders and his former athletes. Included was a message from Avery Brundage, International Olympic Committee president, praising Daughters' work with the Amateur Athletic Union and Olympic Swimming committee.

Four of Daughters' most famous pupils returned to greet him. They were Helene Madison and Mrs. Betty Lea Watson, Seattle; Mrs. Doris Buckley Johnson, Edmonds; and Mrs. Olive McKean Mucha, Portland.

Individual tributes were delivered by Mayor J.D. Braman, Vic Markov, Bobby Morris, the Rev. Elmer B. Christie, Price Sullivan, W.A.C. president; Ken Meisnest, club manager, and Russell W. Young, banquet chairman.
