Why is there incomplete indexing on some documents?

Two factors determine what information is indexed from a document:

  • The contract with the record custodian.
  • The plans for the index.

The FamilySearch project manager and the record custodians of documents not owned by FamilySearch work to determine what information is to be indexed.
Some documents are so detailed that it would take too long to index all of the information they contain. Keep in mind that indexes are not meant to be all inclusive. The goal of indexing is to create something that ultimately leads researchers to the original document.
