Whether to update FamilySearch center computers to Windows 10

Please use the following guidelines to upgrade computers in FamilySearch centers to Windows 10.

The following models may or may not have a Windows Pro (Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8 Pro) sticker. If they DO have a Pro license, they can be upgraded:

  • Dell Optiplex 9030 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 7440 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 5040
  • Dell Optiplex 7450 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 5050
  • Dell Optiplex 7460 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 5060
  • Dell Optiplex 7470 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 5070
  • Lenovo M93Z

If they lack a Pro license, but they are in the approved model list (7010, 7020, 5040, 9030 and the 7440) they can be upgraded. However, you must follow the additional steps in the following Systems with No Pro License section:

Please do not update any donated non-Dell or Lenovo computers other than the ones listed. If they are Windows 7, they must either be turned off or removed.

Note: All other Dell systems have been coming with a Windows 10 Pro license and image from the factory since the xx50 series of devices:

  • Dell Optiplex 5050
  • Dell Optiplex 5060
  • Dell Optiplex 5070
  • Dell Optiplex 5080
  • Dell Optiplex 5090
  • Dell Optiplex 7450 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 7460 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 7470 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 7480 AIO
  • Dell Optiplex 7490 AIO

Please be aware that computers that are not upgraded to Windows 10 are unable to print, and eventually unable to connect to the network. (See the article PrintNightmare link for more information.)

Systems with No Pro License

If the system lacks a Windows Pro license, the Windows 10 Family History Center image can be installed with one difference. The KMS activation script that is found in the Family History Center Application Finder must be run after the install. The approved models to run the KMS activation are: 7010, 7020, 5040, 9030, and the 7440. (See the following Windows 10 Activation Instructions link).

All previous computer models have been replaced in FamilySearch centers by now.
