Where is the Social Security Death Index (SSDI)?

On FamilySearch.org, the fastest way to get to the United States Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is to search by title. The file was last updated in 2014. Since 2014, public access to the updated Death Master File has been through the Limited Access Death Master File certification program instituted under Title 15 Part 1110.

Steps (website)

  1. While signed in to FamilySearch.org, click Search.
  2. Click Records
  3. Locate the Find a Collection section.
  4. In the Collection Title search box, begin entering United States Social Security Death Index.
  5. Click the full name when it appears.
  6. Enter an ancestor's information and click Search.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app:
    • Apple iOS: In the bottom-right, tap the three dots.
    • Android: In the top-left, tap the three lines.
  2. Tap Search Historical Records.
  3. Locate the Find a Collection section.
  4. In the Collection Title search box, begin entering United States Social Security Death Index.
  5. Tap the full name when it appears.
  6. Enter an ancestor's information and click Search.
