Where do I find the film number for a record image?

Learn how to find the film number or DGS number for an image from FamilySearch Historical Records. Record images in FamilySearch could display in the old or new image viewer.

Old image viewer (web and mobile)

In the old image viewer, you see the record image in the center of the screen. Below the image, you see the Image Index.
When you use the Family Tree mobile app on a small screen, such as a mobile phone, you do not see the image index.

  • If you got to the image by searching indexed records, look in the top left. The Film number displays above the Image counter.
  • If you got to the image by browsing unindexed images, look in the top-left. You see the collection title in blue. To the right of the title, click the down-arrow. The film number and collection title display. On a small mobile device, the film number does not display. Sometimes the first image shows the film number. If not, use the full website.

New image viewer (web and mobile)

In the new image viewer, you see the record image on the left portion of the screen. On the right, you see an information panel.
When you use the Family Tree mobile app on a mobile phone, you see the record image above the information panel.

  • At the top of the information panel, if you see a person's name, click the arrow to the left of the name. Then, at the top of the information panel, click Group Data. Scroll down and find the Image Group Number.
  • On the full website, if you searched in Explore Historical Images, at the top of the information panel, you see the Group Data. Scroll to find the Image Group Number.
