What is an indexing project?

An indexing project is a record collection of a specified place or time range, such as the U.S. 1910 census or South Africa death certificates. Each project is divided up into batches which can be assigned out to volunteers to complete the indexing.

Indexing has two types of projects:

  • FamilySearch projects
    • Any volunteer can help index.
  • Partner projects that use FamilySearch indexing services but are managed by another company, or genealogical or historical society. FamilySearch indexing works with other societies to complete projects of mutual interest.
    • The number and type of volunteers accepted for indexing varies from group to group.
