What is a GEDCOM file?

Share

GEDCOM is an acronym for "GEnealogical Data COMmunications."

The GEDCOM standard is a data format used to exchange genealogical information between computer programs.

Most genealogical data management programs can both import (open) and export a GEDCOM file. Many of these products, Ancestral Quest, RootsMagic, and Legacy, are listed the FamilySearch Solutions Gallery.

You can upload GEDCOM files to the FamilySearch website in our Genealogies section. We currently accept all versions of GEDCOM up to and including GEDCOM 5.5.1.
