Tips for filtering by record type in Explore Historical Images

When you search historical images, filtering by record type can limit your search results.

For example, a book of images contains birth, marriage, and death records. The book’s description could mention all three record types. Or it could identify as Vital Records or Parish Records. If you enter the wrong record type, you do not see the book in your search results.

In the example, suppose you want to find marriage records. A more effective search strategy is to set the Life Event filter to Marriages. A book of vital records or parish records then appears in your search results.

If you want to narrow your results, you can go back and add a record type.

Filter by record type

  • To add a record type to an initial search, click More Options.
  • After an initial search, at the bottom of the Refine Search panel, click Show Advanced Search.

Click in the Record Type search box, then click an item in the list. If you used the Refine Search panel, click Update.
