Repairing microfilm in a FamilySearch center

Microfilm can break or lose the leader or trailer (the blank film at the beginning and end). To repair microfilm, use J-Lar splicing tape (80628), available from Distribution Services. Do not use regular clear tape.

To repair microfilm, use the steps below:

  1. Examine the microfilm for torn edges. If torn edges are on a blank area, cut the film to form a straight line. If information is near a torn edge, do not cut.
  2. Cut a piece of J-Lar splicing tape long enough to cover both sides of the microfilm, without excess.
  3. Place one film edge halfway in on the tape.
  4. Place the other end of the film on the tape. If you did not cut the edges, line up the information without overlapping the film.
  5. Fold the tape over on each side. Rub the tape to remove any bubbles.

If you cannot repair the torn microfilm, you can return it to Distribution Services. We can no longer provide a replacement.
