The problems below can occur when centers get replacement machines to use with a Digital Imaging System (DIS). The problems occur because either incorrect drivers are installed or not all needed drivers are installed.
- Error message: No device found. Occurs when you try to scan in XnView with Canon MS 300 or MS 300 II scanner.
- Error message: Scanner Error. Can't locate SCSI Device, check cable and power. (-4536). Occurs when you try to scan in XnView with Canon MS 300 or MS 300 II scanner.
- I see no specific 64-bit drivers for the Canon MS 300. The drivers for the MS 300 are the same 64-bit drivers for the Canon MS 300 II.
First, check the scanner in the Device Manager. To get to the Device Manager, use the steps below:
- Click Start.
- Right-click Computer.
- Click Properties.
- On the left, click Device Manager.
- The Canon scanner should show under Imaging Devices. If it is under Other Devices, the correct drivers are not installed. If you are using the Canon MS 300, you must also check the status of your SCSI device (either an Adaptec SCSI card, or a RATOC* cable) and make sure it is recognized and installed.
Note: The following steps require Windows 7 as the operating system.
If the computer has the Windows 7 ver 2.0 image, you can use the steps below to install the needed drivers for the Canon MS 300 or 300 II scanner. If you have a Canon MS 300, first ensure that your SCSI or RATOC device is installed.
- Open My Computer (Windows Explorer), and navigate to C:\DIS Drivers\Scanners\Microfilm-fiche\Canon\c300ii. (Note: The c300ii drivers work for both the Canon MS 300 and MS 300 II scanners.)
- Run both the Setup.exe files in the All Drivers and Twain directories.
- Go to Device Manager (see the steps above), right-click Canon MS 300 scanner, and click Properties.
- Click the driver tab and then update driver.
- Click the option to choose your own driver, and navigate to one of these addresses: C:\DIS Drivers\Scanners\Microfilm-fiche\Canon\c300ii\Win 7\32bit\INF or C:\Support\FamilySearch\DIS Drivers\Scanners\Microfilm-fiche.
- Click OK so the inf file installs.
- Open XnView.
- Click File.
- Click Twain source.
- Click the Canon MS 300.
- Click File and Acquire, and you should be able to scan.
If you run into problems or have additional questions, please contact FamilySearch.
You can install the RATOC (U2SCX) SCSI to USB cable on the Windows 7 ver. 2.0 computers with the steps below.
- Be sure that the Canon MS 300 scanner is on before you start the computer.
- Sign in as an administrator.
- Click Start.
- Click Computer.
- Double-click the C: drive.
- Double-click the DIS Drivers folder.
- Double-click the Ratoc Cable folder.
- Double-click the U2SCX_64 file to run it.
- If you see a screen with odd characters, wait a few seconds, and it should continue automatically. If it does not, and you are prompted to choose Yes or No, click No.
- Follow the prompts to continue the install.
When the install is complete, you need to install the Canon drivers (see above).
Important note
The Canon 200 scanner is not compatible with Windows 7. As an alternative, FamilySearch center patrons can capture film images with digital cameras.
You must turn on the digital microfilm or fiche scanners before you turn on the computer to allow the computer to find the scanner. (The scanners are SCSI-based.)
