What to do when an image is too large or too small, sideways, or hard to read

Images from old image viewer (web or mobile)

The old image viewer opens with the record image in the center of the screen. An image index (for indexed records) shows at the bottom of the screen. All images in the mobile Family Tree app open in the old viewer.
Modify the image from 2 areas. To the left of the image, find a rectangle with 4 icons.

  • To make the image larger (zoom in), click +.
  • To make the image smaller (zoom out), click -.
  • To see thumbnail images of the records, click the 8-dots icon.
  • The bottom icon allows a full screen view of the image.

In the upper-right, click Tools, and find more options:

  • To rotate the image, click Left. Click again until the image is properly oriented.
  • Adjust Image provides options to adjust the brightness and contrast of the images. Use the sliders, and then click Apply.
  • To change the image to white on a black background, click Invert.

Images from new image viewer (web)

Some images that you find from Search records open in the new image viewer. All of the images you find from Explore Historical Images open in the new image viewer.
In the upper right portion of the film viewer, find tools to modify the image.

  • The grid icon returns you to the thumbnail images.
  • To adjust the image, click the fourth icon (a box with 2 sliders).
    • The Brightness slider allows you to adjust the image brightness.
    • Use the Contrast slider if you want to adjust the image contrast.
    • To change the image to white on a black background, click the Invert Image Colors toggle.
    • You have 2 image rotation options. Each click rotates the image a quarter turn.
    • Use the zoom level toggle to have the system maintain image zoom as you work.
    • To clear all adjustments, click Reset.
  • To zoom out, click -.
  • To zoom in, click +.
