I received an unexpected account recovery email

Don't be alarmed if you receive a password reset email from FamilySearch that you did not request. This sometimes happens because another user entered the wrong username to reset a password. If that username happens to be yours, you receive an email with a password reset link which you can ignore. The other user does not see the email and cannot make changes to your account.

Troubleshooting tips

Any guest can request an account recovery from https://familysearch.org/recover/password. The guest enters either a cell phone number or email address.

  • Sometimes guests accidentally enter another guest's information, thinking it is their own. They don't pay close attention to the information displayed and proceed with the reset. This happens most often when a guest has a common name for a username or email address. As a result, It's possible for you to receive recovery emails you did not request.
