How do I work with sources in Family Tree while using JAWS?

When you want to attach a source not found in the FamilySearch historical records to a person in Family Tree, you attach the source using the Create a Source link. This is done when adding a source from Ancestry, MyHeritage, findmypast, or any website other than FamilySearch Historical Records.

Perform the following steps to create a source:

  1. Copy the URL for the source to the clipboard. This is done by bringing the source up in your browser, pressing Alt + D to move focus to the address bar, and pressing Control + C to copy the URL.
  2. Sign in to Family Tree at https://familysearch.org/tree.
  3. Go to the Details page for the individual for whom you are creating the source.  To do this, bring up the Details page of the individual using the Find command, using the Person drop-down list, or by moving to the Details page for a person displayed on the Tree or Details page.
  4. Move to the Create a Source link. This is done by searching for the Create a Source link using the JAWS virtual find command or by bringing up the Links List and pressing C until you hear Create a Source. It can also be found by pressing H until you hear Sources, then pressing down arrow until you hear Create a Source.
  5. When the focus is on the Create a source link, press Enter to activate the link.
  6. Four fields are displayed. These include: an edit box for the Source title, a radio button for web URL or Create a Memory, an edit box for the URL, and an edit box for the record description. If JAWS does not take you to the first field, press F to move to the field, and if needed, press Enter to go into Forms mode. Enter the requested information. You can see examples of what to enter and the field labels using the up and down arrow keys. The third field is mislabeled. It reads Add a Memory instead of URL for Source. The URL is entered by pressing Control + V to paste the previously copied URL into the field.
  7. After all of the required information is entered, press Enter or Spacebar on the Save button. An edit field, some check boxes, and the Attach button are displayed at the bottom of the page.
  8. Press E or F to move to the edit box, and enter the reason for attaching the source.
  9. Press the down arrow to get to the check boxes which read Add to My Source Box, and Attach This Record and Add It to My Source Box. These boxes are checked by default. If you do not want the source added to your source box, press Space Bar to uncheck these boxes.
  10. Press the down arrow until you reach the Attach link, and press Enter to activate it. The source is attached to the person in Family Tree, and the screen is redrawn.

Perform the following steps to view a source already present in Family tree:

  1. Move to the Sources heading by pressing H until you hear Sources, and press the down arrow to find the source to view. On the first line for the source, there is a graphic with a long string of numbers and letters. This is where the URL for the source is found. The URL is a graphic, so it cannot be read using JAWS. The source title is on the second line.
  2. To view the record for the source, press Enter on the graphic for the URL. A new page with the record for the source is displayed.
  3. Information for the source is usually displayed in a table. Press T to move to the top of the table, and use the arrow keys to read the information in the record. Census records usually have two tables. The top table gives details about the person in focus, and the bottom table gives information about other household members. You can display details about the household members by pressing Enter on the link for their name in the bottom table. This puts focus on the new individual, and details for the person appear in the top table. You can also view additional information about other individuals in any record where their name appears as a link.
  4. After you have viewed the record for the source, go back to the Details page for the person. If the source is in the FamilySearch Historical Records, press Enter on the link for the person’s name which appears just above the Search Results link. Move to the name using the JAWS Virtual find command or by bringing up the Links List and pressing the first letter of the first name until you hear it. If the record is not from the FamilySearch Historical Records, go back to the person’s Details page by bringing up Family Tree and then searching for the person using the Find command, using the Person drop-down list, or by moving to someone displayed on the Pedigree or Details page.
  5. To view the source details, press Enter on the second line. The source details are displayed just below the Source Title. Information displayed includes the URL for the record, the citation, and the reason the record was attached. Links displayed include: View, Edit, Detach, and Tag source.
  6. To close the details, press Enter on the Close Source Details link, which appears above the Source Title.
