How do I use the Place Research Tool in my family history research?

The Place Research Tool can help you to learn about places. The tool provides access to standardized information about places. The tool also links to other places where you can find information about a place, including articles in the FamilySearch Research Wiki.

The Place Research tool uses the same place standards that are used throughout FamilySearch products and services, including Family Tree.

Steps (website)

  • Go to www.familysearch.org/research/places, and sign in.
  • On the left, enter a place in the search box, and press Enter on your keyboard. (If you want to further narrow your search results, click Show More Options.)
  • In the search results, click a place-name.
  • On the right, you see a map pin marking the location of the place.
  • Under the map is information about the place.
    • Basic Information
    • Historical Information
    • Research Links
    • Alternate Names
    • Citations

Suggest a new place

If the system does not find a place from your search, you can suggest a new place.

  1. On the main page, above the search box, click Suggest a new place.
  2. Click in a circle and select a category for the place.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter the place name and click Next.
  5. Click Create Place.
  6. Add details and click Submit.

Improve this place

You can provide additional information to improve the information about a place.

  1. Search and click to view information about a place.
  2. On the map screen, click Improve this place.
  3. Fill in the Suggest an Improvement form and click Submit.

Steps (mobile)

The Place Research Tool is not available through a mobile app. On a mobile device, open a browser, and use the website.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

The Place Research Tool is not available through Family Tree Lite.
