How do I use JAWS PlaceMarkers in Family Tree?

A PlaceMarker is a bookmark that is added to a Web page to mark a location. PlaceMarkers are useful when you want to return to frequently viewed areas on a web page. For example, you might want to quickly move to areas on the Details page such as Vital Information, Spouses and Children, Parents and Siblings, etc. PlaceMarkers can be defined as temporary or permanent. Multiple permanent PlaceMarkers can be set on a web page, but only one temporary PlaceMarker can be set per page.

Perform the following steps to set a temporary PlaceMarker:

  1. Bring up your Internet browser, and sign in to Family Tree: https://familysearch.org/tree
  2. Go to the page where you want to set the PlaceMarker.
  3. Move the virtual cursor to the location on the page where the PlaceMarker will be placed.
  4. Press Ctrl+Windows Key+K to set the temporary PlaceMarker.

Perform the following steps to set a permanent PlaceMarker:

  1. Bring up your Internet browser, and sign in to Family Tree: https://familysearch.org/tree
  2. Go to the page where you want to set the PlaceMarker.
  3. Move the virtual cursor to the location on the page where the PlaceMarker will be placed.
  4. Press Ctrl+Shift+K to bring up the PlaceMarker menu.
  5. Press Enter to bring up the Add PlaceMarker dialogue box. This box opens with focus on the Name edit field. It contains the text that appears at the current cursor location.  To change the PlaceMarker name, type a new name in this field.
  6. Press Tab to move to the next control. This takes you to the Define for all Pages on the Current Domain check box. This box is cleared by default, which allows the PlaceMarker to be anchored only to the current web page. To use this PlaceMarker on all pages within the current domain instead, press Spacebar to check this box.
  7. Press Tab to move to the next control. This takes you to the Anchor to Text check box. This box is also cleared by default. Press the Spacebar to check this box to link the PlaceMarker with specific text, such as a heading on the page. This is useful on frequently updated web pages where text and elements tend to drift from their original position.
  8. Press Tab to move to the Anchor Text edit field. When selected, this field automatically populates using the original text in the Name edit field. This guarantees that the PlaceMarker will always be associated with the text on the web page.
  9. Press Tab to move to the OK button followed by Spacebar to save the PlaceMarker.

Press K to move through the PlaceMarkers present on a web page. Press Shift+K to move backwards through the PlaceMarkers.

PlaceMarkers stay on the web page even when it is closed and your computer is rebooted.  PlaceMarkers may become invalid, if a web page is updated or a new version of JAWS is installed. If this happens, simply set the PlaceMarkers again.
