How do I print historical record images?

You can print the image of most historical records on FamilySearch. However, in some cases the legal agreements between FamilySearch and the organization or government that owns the image prohibits printing.

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.org
  2. At the top of the page, click Search
  3. Click Records.
  4. Enter your search terms, and click Search
  5. In the search results, click a name.
  6. On the right panel, at the top, click View Record.
  7. To the right of the indexed information, click the small version of the document image.
  8. Use the zoom feature or click and drag the image so that the portion of the image that you want to print is visible.
  9. In the black bar above the image, click Print. The portion of the image that you see on the screen prints. The printout includes a description of the record.

Steps (website)—Explore Historical Images

Explore Historical Images does not show a Print button for the images. But, you can download an image and then print it.

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.
  2. Click Search and then click Images.
  3. Search and find the record image.
  4. From the thumbnails, click to enlarge the image you want to download.
  5. To the top-right of the image, click the downward icon.
  6. Find the download on your computer and print it.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, open the additional options:
    • Apple iOS: In the bottom right corner, tap the three lines.
    • Android: In the top left corner, tap the three lines.
  2. Tap Search Historical Records.
  3. Enter your search terms, and tap Search.
  4. In the search results, tap a name.
  5. Tap the small version of the record image.
  6. Position the image so that the portion that you want to print displays.
  7. In the dark bar at the top, tap Print.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Family Tree Lite does not allow you to view and print images. Access FamilySearch Historical Records through the full website or the FamilySearch Family Tree mobile app.
