How do I delete a name incorrectly indexed?

In a record index, you can sometimes find an entry for words that are not actually a name. Or you find a name in the image that is not part of the historical record, but is included in the index.

If you are sure that the name does not belong, you can improve the accuracy of our data by deleting it. Otherwise, we recommend leaving the name as it is.

Steps from a Record Details page (website or mobile)

You can use the Family Tree mobile app on a small screen such as a mobile phone. You can find the panel described in step 2 below the document image.

  1. From the Record Details page, click Edit.
  2. On the right panel, scroll to the bottom.
  3. Click Delete [name].
  4. Click Delete.

You can delete multiple incorrect names that you see on the same image. Here are the steps:

  1. At the top of the right panel, click the back arrow.
  2. You see a list of names on the image. At the bottom of the list, click Delete.
  3. Click in the check box for all the names that you want to delete.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. Read the message. Click Delete All.

Steps from Explore Historical Images (website only)

  1. Navigate to the image.
  2. On the right panel, at the top, click Image Index.
  3. You see the names included in the index. At the bottom of the panel, click Delete.
  4. Click in the check box for all the names that you want to delete.
  5. Click Delete.
  6. Read the message. Click Delete All.
