How do I add marriage events to Family Tree using JAWS?

JAWS (Job Access With Speech) is a screen reader that helps blind or visually impaired users access Family Tree. JAWS allows these users to hear information about people, to add new people to Family Tree, to add marriage events, to reserve temple ordinances, and more.

Perform the following steps to add a marriage event in Family Tree using JAWS:

  1.  Sign in to Family Tree at https://familysearch.org/tree.
  2. Go to the details page for the couple that you want to add a marriage event to. To do this, use the Find link or the Recents button, or move to a person already present on the Tree or details page.
  3. Move to the Spouses and Children section. To do this, use the JAWS virtual find command, or press H until you hear “Spouses and Children.”
  4. Move to the Edit Couple button. This button is not labeled in the current Family Tree release. To find the button, press B until you hear “Unlabeled 1 button.” You can also use the Down Arrow key to reach this button. It is just after the marriage information and just before the second partner's name. To make this button easier to find, assign a custom label. See How do I add Other Information in Family Tree with JAWS?.
  5. Activate the Edit Couple button by pressing Spacebar. A new screen is displayed.
  6. Move to the Add Event button. To do this, press H until you hear "marriage events," and then press the Down Arrow to move to Add Event.
  7. Press Spacebar to activate this button. A form for the marriage event is displayed.
  8. If JAWS does not take you to the form, press C to move to the first field in the form, which is a combo box. If JAWS does not go into forms mode, press Enter. The combo box gives choices for types of marriage events. By default, the event is set to Marriage. You can move to Divorce, Common Law, or Annulment using the Up and Down Arrow keys.
  9. After moving to the event you want to add, press Tab to move to the date field, and enter the date for the event. Press the Down and Up Arrow keys to bring up the standardized date, and press Enter when the standardized date is displayed.
  10. Press Tab once to move to the place the event occurred, and enter the place. Press the Down and Up Arrow keys to bring up the standardized place, and press Enter when the standardized place is displayed.
  11.  Press Tab to move to the Reason this information is correct edit field, and enter the reason you feel the event is correct. Possible reasons include a marriage record, a census record, or personal knowledge.
  12. Press Tab until you reach the Save button, and press Spacebar to save your changes.
  13. Press Escape to exit the Add Event screen. The program returns to the details page.
