How do I add a first ancestor in Family Tree?

The First Ancestor is the first or founding member of a Chinese clan. If you use the First Ancestor view, we recommend that you add your first ancestor as one of the first things you do. If you have more than first ancestor, you can enter them all and switch between them as needed.

If you do not know your first ancestor, or if your heritage does not follow a clan-based, patrilineal family history, we recommend that you use a different view screen.

Steps (website)

When you first switch to the First Ancestor view, a popup helps you enter your first ancestor. If it does not come up, use one of these options:

  1. Make sure the correct person of focus is shown at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select an option to add the first ancestor:
    • At the top where the first ancestor's name should appear, click Add First Ancestor.
    • On the person of focus, click +, and click Add First Ancestor.
    • Click the Options button, and click Add First Ancestor. If the person already has one first ancestor, click More. Then click Add First Ancestor.
  3. Enter information about the first ancestor, and click Next, which is available after you click Deceased. (If you know the ID, click By ID Number.)
  4. Click Next.
  5. If Family Tree found people who match your search, it lists them. Indicate whether you need to add a matching person or create a new one:
    • If the person is already in Family Tree, click Add Match.
    • If the person is not already in Family Tree, click Create Person.
    • To adjust your search, click Refine Search.
