How do I access drop-down lists using JAWS?

You can access the Tree and Person drop-down lists using JAWS.  These lists allow you to perform the tasks below.

  • Move to any of the last 50 people you viewed.
  • Search for an individual by ID.
  • Add an unconnected person to Family Tree.

Use the steps below to access individuals on the Tree and Person drop-down Lists:

  1. Sign in at https://familysearch.org/tree. Your personal pedigree appears.
  2. To access the Tree or Person drop-down list, ring up the Links List with Insert + F7 and type T until you hear "Tree drop-down list" or P until you hear "Person drop-down list." You can also find these links with the JAWS virtual Find command, Ctrl + F or you can press the down arrow until you find the link you want.
  3. Press Enter to activate the link you select.
  • At the top of the list is an edit box where you can enter the 7-character ID for the person you want to view.
  • A link to add an Unconnected person appears at the bottom of the list.
  1. Press the Down Arrow to move to the person you want to view. You can also access a person by bringing up the links list with Insert + F7 and pressing the first letter of the first name of the individual you want to view. To add an unconnected person, press A until you hear "Add Unconnected Person."
  2. Press Enter to activate the link you have selected.
  • The Tree or Details page for the selected person then displays.
  • The Details page gives information about the person, including birth and death information, spouses and children, parents and siblings, and sources.
  • The Tree page gives a pedigree chart for the selected person. This includes spouses and children, parents, and grandparents.
  • If you activate the link to add an unconnected person, a new screen appears where you can enter vital information for the individual you want to add.

Note: The Tree and Person drop-down lists do not work with version 13 of JAWS. They do work with versions 14, 15, and 16.
