How do I print fan charts and pedigree charts in Family Tree?

You can print fan charts and family group records from Family Tree. FamilySearch converts the information into a PDF file, which you can save to your computer.

On both the website and in the mobile app, you can print the following:

  • Seven-generation fan chart.
  • Five-generation portrait chart.
  • Four-generation pedigree chart.
  • Photo or story.
  • The contents of the person page or a time line. (Press Ctrl+P to print this.)

Note: The default print orientation is portrait. However, the landscape orientation better optimizes the presentation of your fan chart. If you want to change this, you will want to click Preferences after you click the Print button.

Steps (website)

  1. After signing in, click Family Tree.
  2. In the drop-down menu, click Tree. If you are printing the chart for yourself--with yourself at the center of the fan chart or the beginning of the pedigree chart--skip to Step 6. If you want to place an ancestor at the center of the fan chart, continue to Step 3.
  3. Go to the person page of the ancestor who you would like positioned at the center of the fan chart or the beginning of the pedigree chart. (In the chart that you see on screen, click the ancestor's name. Then, in the name card that appears, click the ancestor's name once again.)
  4. From the person page, click View Tree.
  5. Select the type of chart you would like to print: Portrait, Landscape, Fan. If it is not the current view, follow these steps:
    1. In the top-left corner of the screen, click the name of the chart currently being displayed (Portrait, Landscape, Fan).
    2. From the drop-down menu that appears, click the chart you would like to print.
    3. Note: If you select Fan Chart, be sure to select the information you would like the fan chart to include: Family Lines, Birth Country, Sources, Stories, Photos, Research Helps, and Ordinances. This information will be visible in the printed document.
  6. If anyone on the chart has more than one spouse or set of parents, and you want to print the chart with the ones not currently displayed, change the spouse or parents:
    1. Click the name of the spouse or parent that you want to switch.
    2. Click Person.
    3. If the Details section is not already open, click Details.
    4. Scroll down to the Family Members section, and click the Preferred checkbox for the spouse or parent you want to print on the report.
    5. Find the Print section on the right side of the screen, and click the report that you want
  7. When the screen shows the information you want to print, click Options, then Print.
  8. The chart opens as a PDF in a new tab, use your browser's print feature to print it. If your computer has trouble with the PDF file, try clearing your cache and cookies, or using a different browser.

Note: On the FamilySearch website, Family Tree generates interactive PDF files for the 4-generation pedigree, which means you can add or modify information in it. As you work with interactive files, be aware of the following guidelines:

  • Chrome supports interactive PDF files the best. Firefox users see a message at the top right when they open the PDF: "This PDF document contains forms. The filling of form fields is not supported."
  • Changing the PDF file does not change the information in Family Tree. We recommend changing the information in Family Tree and then printing the report.
  • Each person has an F box on the chart. Use this box if you want to coordinate the people on the chart with printed family group records.
  • The size of each generation is a fixed width. You cannot alter it.
