How can I find the image index in Explore Historical Images?

Two image viewers exist for historical record images:

  • An older viewer shows the record image with an Image Index below the image. (Some images are not yet indexed and lack an image index.)
  • The newer viewer only shows the image index to the right of the image. Not all images are indexed.

If you search in Explore Historical Images, you see the image on the left and a panel on the right. If available, you can see the image index on the right.

  1. Open the image of interest.
  2. At the top of the right side panel, click the Index tab.
    1. If the index is available, you see the indexed data.
    2. If no index is available, you see the Indexed Data heading without content.

From a record search, some record images open in the new image viewer. On the right, you see the indexed information for the person whose record you found. You can also view all the indexed names in the image:

  1. At the top of the right panel, click the back arrow. The image index displays.
  2. To see details about a name in the list, click the name.
