1. Introduction

FamilySearch Chat is a tool for communicating with people who have contributed information to Family Tree. FamilySearch Chat is not available for users under the age of 18. However, these users can participate in FamilySearch Chat through shared family groups.

The initial chat must be sent through the Chat button that you see when you click a contributor's name in Family Tree. Sending or receiving a chat through Family Tree transfers the person's name to your contact list in FamilySearch Chat.

Note: If an individual dies, their chats (from FamilySearch Chats) cannot be shared with living family members because their chats are considered private communication.

Question: Will my old messages within FamilySearch be preserved in the FamilySearch Chat system?

Answer: The previous FamilySearch Messages from 1 November, 2022 are being migrated to FamilySearch Chat. One of the reasons for the 1 November 2022 date is that the Shared Family Groups feature was made available at that time. Migrating the messages from that date allows you to continue chatting with those persons or about those topics.

Answer: For private chats between you and 1 other user, begin typing their name and select it from the list that appears. For private chats among you and 2 or more users, start a new chat with all the users you want to include as part of the chat. You cannot add a user to a private chat if that user was not invited when the chat was created. For event chats, in the lower right hand corner of the chat window, look for the Person+ icon.
