The England Jurisdictions 1851 map is a powerful geographic information system (GIS). It shows parish maps of the 39 counties in England. FamilySearch recently upgraded this map to new technology to ensure it can continue to perform efficiently. This transition means that some functions in the new technology behave differently from the old ones.
Note: FamilySearch remains committed to supporting this map and is testing an updated version. The former version is no longer available because it was on technology that can no longer be supported. To preview and test the new version, go to FamilySearch Labs, and select Improved England Jurisdictions, 1851.
Steps
- Enter the place you want to find into the search field. Search at a parish level or larger.
- The county and parish layers will be on by default.
- Searching for villages or townships within parishes is not currently supported.
- If you don't see the boundary for the layer you're looking for, turn the layer on in the layer selection box. Turn off any you don't want to see.
- Select the place from the drop-down list. The map will zoom in.
- Look at the right-hand side panel to see record information such as when record keeping began, other jurisdictions that may have kept records for that area, and options for searching regional FamilySearch resources.
- PR refers to Parish Records.
- BT refers to Bishop Transcripts.
- Note: The links to the FamilySearch Library Catalog, Historical Records, and FamilySearch Wiki will take you to results that reflect the jurisdiction results. For example, if you select the Whitechapel (York) parish, then click the FamilySearch Wiki link, and you will immediately view the Wiki as if you had already searched for that jurisdiction.
Measurement and Basemaps Tools
The measurement tool is helpful for calculating the distance between points or the area of a space. The basemap tool is helpful for changing the appearance of the map. To use them, select the appropriate button above the search field.

Upcoming Features
FamilySearch will continue to add new features—such as neighboring parishes, villages and townships search, radius searches, and places within places—to this tool as it grows.
