FamilySearch Places: Getting Started as an Editor
Welcome to FamilySearch Places!
Places provides a unique way of connecting with family history through the places where important family events took place. Our purpose statement provides more information on the work that we do and the benefits that it provides:
We acquire and manage data about localities to help users discover, gather and connect with their family by understanding the places in their family histories.
Working with places can be a very rewarding part of family history. In fact, many of our volunteer editors enjoy it so much that they are reluctant to stop helping with this work!
We invite you to start your journey working with FamilySearch Places by viewing the Roots Tech 2021 presentation "How Standardized Places Work in FamilySearch" first. Then please review the following additional content in this guide:
- FamilySearch Places: Principles & Guidelines
- FamilySearch Places: Procedures
- FamilySearch Places: FAQs
Additionally, we encourage you to review the country-specific information that can be found in the FamilySearch Places: Country-Specific Guidelines page for any countries that you will be working in. This information outlines all the administrative structure, guidelines, and any exceptions that specific to a country. This page is a work-in-progress with updates. So please be sure to checkback periodically to ensure that you are following the latest guidelines.
Finally, we encourage you to review these pages periodically to stay current with the principles and guidelines that are taught. Some of them become more concrete and make more sense after some exposure to working in FamilySearch Places.
We thank you for your interest in working with FamilySearch Places and express our sincere gratitude for your help. We pray that you will be blessed as you work to help describe places throughout the world and throughout all time.
